Charity and Development Appeal Slated for February 9-10, 2002

(Feb 5 Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix) – Most Reverend Thomas J. O’Brien, Bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, has designated February 9-10, 2002 as the weekend for the annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA). The CDA gives local Catholics an opportunity to support the 72 charitable and educational ministries, services, and programs of the Diocese.

This year’s theme is “Join Hands with Christ – Change Lives through Love”. The CDA provides help to families in crisis; the hungry and homeless; the disabled and distressed, and our senior citizens by distributing funds to groups such as the Catholic Social Service of Central and Northern Arizona, the Foundation for Senior Living, the Vocations Office, needy parishes, schools and students, the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Black Catholic Ministry, Hispanic Ministry, and Native American Ministry to name just a few.

Last year nearly 50,000 families within the Diocese of Phoenix contributed a record $9 million to the CDA. This year’s goal for the appeal is $9.5 million.

“There are a thousand different ways the Church reaches out to people so that they can live their lives in dignity,” said Bishop O’Brien. “You are the hope of those who need to be touched by your charity, this is one of the principal ways we can fulfill the command of our Lord to love and serve one another. It is through this annual appeal and through the generosity of thousands of Catholics like yourself that we are able to continue the work of the Church in a powerful and meaningful way.”
