Comments From Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien Regarding
the Rejection of Some Elements of the "Charter for the Protection
of Children and Young People."
(Oct 17 Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix) - “There will be no changes
on the status of priests I’ve made decisions about until further
clarification is made,” Bishop Thomas J. O’Brien said.
Bishop O’Brien added that he expects the Nov. 11 USCCB meeting
in Washington, D.C., to be the time when full discussion of Vatican concerns
will take place.
However, Vatican concern about the charter does not mean that the Vatican
isn’t concerned or is not dedicated to ensuring that the Church
provides the safest and most secure environment possible for youth and
children.
“The Vatican is not taking this lightly,” Bishop O’Brien
said. “The sexual abuse of young people and children remains a very
serious issue.”
Bishop O’Brien noted that the Catholic Church is the universal
church, and that issues involving the changing of centuries-old Church
law requires much thought, work and reflection. The Roman Catholic Church
is a global church and heavily weighs any changes to Church law that are
being made for one particular country, the bishop said.
When more information is forthcoming from the U.S. Conference of Catholic
Bishops he will comment further and answer questions from the press.
Because the Vatican’s concern seems to deal with issues of canon
law, the media may contact the Phoenix Diocese’s Canon Lawyer, the
Rev. Timothy Davern, at (480) 838-0207, ext. 13.
Any other questions can be directed to Kim Sue Lia Perkes, Director of
Communication for the Diocese of Phoenix, at (602) 432-9554.
