Press Room for the Diocese of Phoenix
Rev. George Bredemann
In May 1999 Fr. George Bredemann pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted
child molestation and was sentenced in July. At that time, Bishop Thomas
J. O'Brien stated in a press release, "I assure you that Father Bredemann
will never again minister to children or families." After violating
the conditions of his parole, Fr. Bredemann was returned to prison where
he remains.
In 1990 the canonical process was initiated to seek the involuntary laicization
of Fr. Bredemann. The decision of the Diocese of Phoenix Tribunal was
that he be dismissed from the clerical state. That sentence was appealed
by Fr. Bredemann and ultimately was sent to the Sacred Roman Rota. The
case has since been returned to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. No final
decision has been returned.
Should Fr. Bredemann ever be released from prison he will never be allowed
to serve in priestly ministry, even should the sentence of dismissal from
the clerical state by the Phoenix Tribunal not be upheld.
Fr. Bredemann was ordained on October 29, 1983.
He served at St. Theresa Church from the time of his ordination until
October 1986. He then served at St. Catherine Church until he was placed
on Administrative Leave in December 1988.
