Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic School 7th Grade Team
Wins Aerospace Contest

Phoenix, January 7). – On December 29th, the Honeywell Fiesta Bowl sponsored the Annual Aerospace Challenge Finals (presented by The Arizona Republic), and five of the original 57 school teams competed in the final competition. Ss. Simon & Jude School won top honors for the second time in four years.

Teams were challenged to design a space station for 100 people to live on for two years in the year 2025. Teams had to consider all aspects of space life, including waste disposal, food supplies, power source and emergency evacuation strategies. Total cost for the project could not exceed $50, and the winning space station was produced for $33.70.

Judging was done by Honeywell engineers and scientists. Each student team had to give an oral presentation and answer questions posed by the judges. NASA astronauts attended the competition, and students were able to talk with them throughout the day.

Named Amiciticum (Latin for Alliance), the winning space station was conceptualized and produced by seventh-graders Tricia Schwartz, Victoria Placencia, Sonora Crittenden, Sal Guardiola, Matt Pharris, and Brendan Hynes. These students have been working with their Junior High Science Teacher Maureen Hill on the project since early September. The winners won tickets to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Game and a tour of the Johnson Space Center in Houston later this winter.

This is the sixth year of the Aerospace Challenge, and it is the fifth year that Ss. Simon & Jude School has participated. The school has had at least one team go on to finals each year, and Ss. Simon & Jude’s 2001 team also won that year’s competition.
