CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 2007 EVENTS
The Diocese of Phoenix’s Catholic schools will celebrate Catholic Schools Week, Jan. 28 through Feb. 3. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: the Good News in Education.” The theme was chosen because of its appeal to Catholic schools and for the strong message it sends to parents and supporters.
Here is a listing of some of the events taking place at Catholic schools throughout the Valley:

Sunday, Jan. 28: Catholic Schools Week Mass, 10 a.m. Free-dress coupons will be given out after Mass. Reception will begin after Mass. Teachers are asked to stay. This will be a social gathering by the blue picnic tables for families and friends.
Monday, Jan. 29: Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. Free-dress day for students who attend Mass. Free-dress coupons should be brought in by the students. Penny War begins today and ends on Friday. Luncheon provided for teachers by Student Council.
Tuesday, Jan. 30: Parent Appreciation Day. Students write parents a thank you letter for sending them to Catholic school. Popsicles with Parents, 3-3:30 p.m. at the picnic tables, free while supplies last, one per person.
Wednesday, Jan. 31: Dress up as a saint of your choice. Students create cards for priests.
Thursday, Feb. 1: Student Appreciation Day. Mismatch Clothes Day. Extra recess. No homework.
Friday, Feb. 2: Community Appreciation Day. No backpack day for students. School Mass at 8:30 a.m. Cards presented to the priest at Mass. Pep assembly at 10 a.m. Family Picnic Day, BBQ lunch available, eighth-grade fundraiser, 10:30 a.m.-noon.

Wednesday 1/31/07: Student Appreciation Day – Posters will be placed all around school showing appreciation for students. Teachers may treat their class in any way they choose. Faculty/8th Grade game at 1:15PM. Staff Appreciation “Happy Hour” after school.
Thursday 2/1/07: Family Appreciation Day – Each student writes a letter or makes a card thanking their families for the sacrifices they make to send them to Catholic school. 8th grade will attend the diocesan Mass.
Friday 2/2/07: Special Lunch and Activity Day – Lunch at 12:30PM on the ramada provided by PTO. School family group activity to follow for the rest of the afternoon.

Wednesday, Jan. 24: Open House. Families are invited to tour the campus, meet our experienced staff and observe kindergarten through eighth-grade classes in session, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. The tour includes our St. Philomena Adoration Chapel, science and computer labs as well as new playground/fitness area. School staff available to answer questions and assist with registration for the 2007-2008 school year. Private tours may also be arranged anytime during the school year.

Ongoing: While completing other service projects, St. Gregory Catholic School is working on a community project to provide baby products for an orphanage in Africa. Our students and families are collecting baby diapers, blankets, bottles, baby silverware and dishes, as well as new and used infant clothing.
Sunday, Jan. 28: Students to attend 10 a.m. Mass in uniform and the children’s choir will sing. Students will distribute apples to people as they leave Mass. The students will also be thanking the parishioners for their support of St. Gregory Catholic School. Continental breakfast in the cafeteria and start of annual book fair in Gordon Hall. The book fair will continue throughout the week.
Each classroom will decorate their door that will reflect a quilt with the message, “Catholic Schools: The Good News in Education.” Students will construct the quilt pieces made out of construction paper and art work. They will use the Student Learning Expectations to depict how St. Gregory Catholic School is “The Good News in Education.”
Monday, Jan. 29: Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day.
Tuesday, Jan. 30: Community Appreciation Day: alumni, volunteers, parents, parish council, finance council, school board, benefactors and others are invited to attend an all-school Mass and feast on breakfast after Mass.
Wednesday, Jan. 31: The Book Fair will be open for Family Night.
Thursday, Feb. 1: Grandparents Day: Grandparents are invited to join grandchildren for lunch and shop in the Book Fair with grandchildren.
Friday, Feb. 2: Student Appreciation Day: Students are allowed to be out-of-uniform and will participate in a Zoo Animal presentation for preschool-fifth grades, or Career Day for sixth-eighth grades. A special lunch will be served for all students. School will dismiss at 1 p.m. and teachers will begin a professional development session.

Student Council members will share student-made notes to all member of our community at each Mass on Saturday evening, Sunday morning, and Sunday evening.
Monday, January 29 Student Appreciation Day
Our day will begin with Mass in Church at 8:30. Mrs. Kilcoyne’s eighth grade class will be our leaders for this occasion. Our PTO will provide a healthy hot dog lunch for all students during their regular lunch periods. Juice and baked chips will also be provided.
Tuesday, January 30 Teacher Appreciation Day
Our teachers will switch classes with their “buddy” class to share and gain some insights into why they are blessed to teach the grade level they have chosen! Also, our wonderful PTO mothers will provide a lunch for all faculty and staff members.
Wednesday, January 31 Mass with Bishop Olmsted at the Cathedral
Our Student Council members will attend Mass at Saint Simon and Jude Cathedral as our bishop leads in the celebration of the Eucharist. Following the Mass, the students will take part in the Catholic Schools Rally at the Arizona State Capitol to remind our Senators and Representatives of the importance of Catholic Schools to all State citizens of Arizona. Just imagine if there were no Catholic Schools in our state! Now that would be an impact felt by all! Our legislators will also be encouraged to continue our tax credits administered by CTODP.
Thursday, February 1 Spirit Day at STS
The famous and traditional volleyball battle between eighth grades and faculty/staff will begin at 1:30 in the gym. All are welcomed to this very loud event. Thanks to our PTO, the students will enjoy a Jamba Juice right after their lunches for a special treat. Thank you, moms!
Friday, February 2 Family Appreciation Day
It’s time to bring out the picnic basket and blanket. At 11:00 a.m. our Family Picnic will begin in the School Courtyard. After a couple of announcements, Mrs. Hebert’s sixth grade class will lead us in prayer to close our week. Friday is a Free Jean Day! Students may wear appropriate jeans to school with their uniform tops and will not have to pay a “buck.” Dismissal is at noon. CIMI moms are taking orders for anyone wishing to buy a lunch from Sack’s on that day. Pick up an order form in the office or download it from this email. The deadline for these orders is Monday, January 29.
