Biographical Note

The Most Reverend James Steven Rausch was born on September 4, 1928 in Albany, Minnesota. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 2, 1956, and was named Auxiliary of St. Cloud, Minnesota on April 26, 1973. At the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, Italy, he earned his Doctorate in Pastoral Sociology, Development Economics in 1969. From 1970 to March 1977 he served at the United States Catholic Conference and as General Secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. On March 22, 1977, Bishop Rausch was installed as Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona. Bishop Rausch succeeded Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy as the Second Bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix. Bishop James S. Rausch died of a massive heart attack at 11:47am, Monday, May 18, 1981. Bishop Rausch was 52 years old.
