Points of Interest:
Calvary is our oldest cemetery. It is located next to Northern Arizona University.
A Veterans Section was established in 1997. St. Joseph Columbarium Section was constructed in 1996. It has a beautiful setting with a 7 foot statue of St. Joseph in the middle of the patio and a spectacular view of the 12,000 foot high San Francisco Peaks to the north. This is the highest peak in Arizona. There is an Unborn Section for prematurely aborted fetuses. Some of the original settlers of Arizona are buried here, including the Babbitt family.
Sacred Heart Story:
There is a statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the old entrance of the cemetery. Back in the 1920’s-1940’s there was an old housing project owned by the lumber mill in town. This old housing was known as Shantytown. This is where the majority of the poor millworkers lived (mostly Hispanics). A good majority of the residents of Shantytown at the time were Hispanic and very religious and superstitious. At this time there was a story going around that a lady had lost her baby. She would fly through the dirt streets of Shantytown at night crying and looking for her baby. So, the people of Shantytown erected a statue of the Sacred Heart at the end of the main street to ward off the crying lady. Later on, when Shantytown closed down, the statue was brought by the priest and people in procession to the cemetery and placed by the gate. The statue has been there ever since.
