Relocating or Visiting Deacons

Deacons visiting or moving here permanently are welcomed into the Diocese of Phoenix. The Diocese of Phoenix was founded on December 2, 1969 with Our Lady of Guadalupe as patroness. The diocese consists of 43,967 square miles including Maricopa County, Mohave County, Yavapai County and Coconino County (except the Navajo Reservation), and the Gila River Indian Reservation in Pinal county. the total Catholic population is estimated to be over 500,000 with about 200,000 registered households. There are over 300 priests including diocesan, extern, and religious, 236 deacons (including retired, sick, extern, and absent), and over 200 religious sisters. There are 90 parishes and 28 missions, 6 high schools, and 28 elementary schools.

Deacons typically are assigned to parishes for their main ministries with high priority given to care of the sick and bereaved, homebound, hospitalized, and imprisoned. Hispanic ministry is a high priority for deacons, and there is an emphasis on the ministries of marriage preparation and annulments. Life centered ministries are given a high priority by the diaconal community including all matters related to the dignity of life.

Deacons visiting in the diocese for a significant period of time and deacons planning on moving here are asked to contact the office of the diaconate as much in advance as possible. All deacons are granted faculties and assigned to parishes, hospitals, prisons and so forth solely by the bishop. It is not appropriate for an out-of-diocese deacon to approach a parish priest or pastor to ask for an assignment. There is an application process that includes a thorough background check for all clergy moving into the Diocese of Phoenix.

The Diocese of Phoenix is a rapidly growing church with a blend urban, suburban, and rural flavors and a rich multicultural heritage. There are abundant opportunities to serve and a wide array of ministries open to all. Many deacons in the Roman Catholic Church of Phoenix have transferred here from other archdiocese and dioceses and they are a great gift to us all.
