The St. Teresa of Avila Catechetical Leadership Award is given to recognize
and express gratitude to the outstanding achievement of a professional
Catechetical Leader in the Diocese of Phoenix.
Presented annually since 1992, the award is sponsored by the Diocesan
Department of Family Catechesis.
This award is named after St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), a doctor of the Church. During her lifetime, the Protestant reformation was in full swing; the Inquisition was holding great sway over the lives of everyone, and she herself was threatened by it; the Council of Trent was in session and the Catholic Counter-reformation was beginning to take effect. In a time of turmoil, much like our own, Teresa was a reformer of her own Carmelite Order, a counsellor to Bishops, a mystic whose writings on the spiritual life still form us today. She models for us a life of prayer that is about the whole of life. In bestowing this award on one of our peers, we acknowledge that St. Teresa's wholehearted devotion to the Church and its renewal is a life we wish to emulate.
Nominations for the St. Teresa of Avila Catechetical Leadership Award are
received from individuals in the Diocese of Phoenix. A person may nominate
him/herself; a couple may be nominated; only one award will be given.
