Advanced Training
in Catechetical and Philosophical Principles
Leadership Conference for Parish Catechetical and Youth Leaders
January 6-11, 2008
Diocesan Pastoral Center
Background
Following the lead of Pope John Paul II, the Advanced Training Conference for Parish Catechetical and Youth Leaders is designed to equip them to meet the demands of fostering the New Evangelization in the Church.
This conference began in 1998 with a partnership between Franciscan University of Steubenville and Life Teen International as the Advanced Training Conference in Youth Ministry. In 2005, the Diocese of Phoenix became the host of this conference at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in downtown Phoenix.
Beginning in January 2008, this Conference expands to offer tracks for Children’s Catechesis and RCIA/Adult Faith Formation.
Building upon basic methodology (as provided in our Basic Training Conference), this conference helps Parish Catechetical and Youth Leaders develop the skills needed to foster conversion in their programs.
Goals
The goals of the Advanced Training are:
1. Methodology: To expose the participant to the key methodological principles of evangelization and catechesis;
2. Formation: To help the participant understand the catechetical and academic principles behind the basic methods of evangelization and catechesis;
3. Reflection: To provide opportunities for the participants to reflect upon goals #1 and #2 and apply them to their current parish setting.
Our desire for each participant is that they:
- Have the understanding and ability to articulate and advocate for the Church’s vision of evangelization and catechesis to pastors, staff, and all those served by the parish;
- Have the skills to translate the principles of evangelization and catechesis to their parish setting;
- Be able to deepen the quality of evangelization and catechesis offered to their parishes, beginning with the liturgy.
Certification and Credentialing
By attending the Advanced Training Conference, along with completing the given assignments, participants will be granted a certificate of completion. Additionally, proficiency in methodology (such as attending a Basic Training Conference) is required for certification.
The certificate simply represents the completion of the assigned work; it is not a recommendation or endorsement of the participant’s ability to succeed as a Parish Catechetical or Youth Leader. The pastor will determine the participant’s ability to be a leader in the Catholic Church.
The Basic and Advanced Training Conferences can be applied towards credentialing and recredentialing as a coordinator or director.
