My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

How blessed we are to be members of a Church that has graced our world with the saving message of Jesus Christ for over two millennia. As we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Diocese of Phoenix, we may at first question how significant this event is in view of the history of the Church. But, as you read the history that is contained in this anniversary book, I hope that you will come to appreciate how the last 40 years is the latest chapter in a story of faith that goes back to the 16th century and beyond.

When I reviewed the history of the Catholic Church in what is now the Diocese of Phoenix, I was struck by a common thread. If faith is a gift, and we believe it is, then for us it is a gift that has been brought to us on the shoulders and from within the hearts of dedicated priests, religious and laity who exemplify the universal nature of our Catholic Church.

...It is my hope that, as you read the pre-history and history of our Diocese, you will join me in a prayer of gratitude for how abundantly God has blessed the Diocese of Phoenix.
