Called to Protect

2008-2009 Called to Protect Requirements for Parent Volunteers

The Called to Protect Classes are for Clergy, employees, and volunteers on our campus to help them in learning myths and facts about sexual abuse and sexual offenders. They teach detailed warning signs to watch for in adults who may abuse, and how to identify children who may have been abused. Participants learn specific steps to take in screening, guidelines for interaction, monitoring, training and responding.

To keep ministries safe, standards must be met in parishes, schools, youth events,—anywhere there are children.  Because of this, the following protocols have been put in place for our employees and our parent volunteers:

  1.  All volunteers who are on campus during the school day when students are present and all employees of the Diocese on our campus must complete the Called to Protect Foundation class.  Begun in 2006, the Foundation Class takes approximately 3 hours and must be completed in person either at Notre Dame or through another provider in the Diocese.  Classes offered outside of Notre Dame Prep can be found online at www.safeenvironmenttraining.org by clicking on “Register for Classes”.
  2. Once the Foundation Training is completed, volunteers and employees must participate in a yearly renewal class.  This class is offered in person or online through www.safeenvironmenttraining.org by clicking on “Online Renewal”.
  3. Important Notes on trainings:
    • SET I or SET II training done prior to 2006 does not count for Foundation Training
    • Training requirements are for any volunteer working on campus during the school day and who are on campus MORE than 1 time during the year.  Positions that require training include: volunteering at the front desk, guidance department, athletic department, Chapel Care Committee, or snack sales help
    • Volunteers helping with events who are meeting with committees after school or off campus and not directly helping our staff or students during the school day are not required to participate in training, but are always invited to be a part of the Called to Protect classes
    • New class offerings at Notre Dame Prep will be posted on our website and in weekly newsletters as they become available.
    • If you are unsure of your status or of your class history, please feel free to call or email the school and contact either Preston Colao or Debi Wells who can check the Diocese Safe Environment Database to inform you of your status and class history.
