January “Reach Out and Read” Event

On Saturday - January 27th, 14 NDP students spent the day helping out at Reach Out and Read .  ROR targets children who are growing up in poverty and are often at risk for reading and school failure. ROR promotes early literacy by providing books at hospital and clinic programs. Our group of NDP students assisted in the warehouse by sorting, cataloging and organizing new and gently used books.  This is the first time Reach Out and Read have partnered with a school to work in the warehouse.  The NDP students were able to fill all of the shelves for the agency and now there are thousands and thousands of books ready to get out to the children.  The event yielded such a welcomed success, that Reach Out and Read asked for a continued quarterly partnership!

NDP students said they enjoyed sorting the books and felt a sense of accomplishment after the day was done because they knew they were helping kids in need.  They also liked meeting and getting to know fellow students, and spending the day together working as a team.

Thanks to coordinator Marcia Hugus, parents, and students who helped at this event.

Special Olympics Holiday Bowling Classic

The Special Olympics Holiday Bowling Classic on December 2 was a huge success. We were able to transport 44 students to the help in various capacities. Mostly the volunteers were cheering supporters for each of the various teams they were helping. Not only were they getting to know the participants of the event, they also got time to get to know their fellow students from school. Comments by the students included:

I would happily do this again even if I didn't get service hours…I enjoyed this activity very, very much… This event meant a lot to me…I met some great people, and the event was a blast!... It was a really good experience to help disabled people… All of the From The Heart activities should be like this. I enjoyed every minute of it.”

The committee it working to provide more volunteer experiences like this. Continue to check the From the Heart website under the Spiritual Life tab for more exciting opportunities.
