Honor’s Club

I passed out invitations to the 2nd annual Honor’s Club this past week.  The invitations were given to children that were committed and engaged in learning.  Students do not necessarily have to be straight A’s, rather it is more important that they are motivated enough to work hard and I do mean hard!  We have about 10-11 students that demonstrated those very qualities in regards to their academics!  Keep working, reading, and loving to learn.

Epiphany Party

This year, we opted not to have a Christmas party.  Instead we celebrated the Epiphany with cookies, cupcakes, and punch.  In addition we passed out the gifts that we were to have made for our Secret Santa.  We looked at the meaning Christmas and decided that making gifts that came from the heart was more important.  Everyone seemed to truly enjoy themselves and the home made gifts were wonderful!

Many thanks to Mrs. Rosemary Hernandez for helping the students built and decorated the altar we had in our room for the day of the dead celebration

We had a great time celebrating our first Lord’s Day Celebration November 6.  We look forward to our next one!

In Science Lab, we connected batteries and pencils, added water and baking soda and checked our results!  We split oxygen and hydrogen and watched bubbles everywhere.

Rebecca Litton Spelling

I attended a conference this week that answered the many, many questions that I felt I had concerning Spelling, the need and purpose of and offered a new and improved way of teaching that actually insisted that the students become better spellers and this is not just on the “Friday test” but they would be able to apply ii in their everyday writing!.  Mrs. Fyan had previous knowledge and had seen the positive effects of the program and has given me permission to adopt the new series.  I will need to teach the program to the students first and then move on.  This will take time but we will get it down.  This transition will be difficult for some and others will excel but together we can help our students become better spellers and writers!

January Book Report

This month’s book report is Realistic Fiction.  This type of book is contemporary, modern fiction that really could happen.  For example, G. Korman writes a trilogy about a group of teens that are expert climbers and compete to climb Mt. Everest or a group of teens that become shipwrecked on an Island .  Students will have the opportunity to write a paper, create a diorama, or give an oral summary of book.  Their choice once again.  The reading minutes this month are 400 minutes.

After school Tutoring

Most of you are aware that I am enrolled at NAU for continuing education with my Master’s in Elementary Education with a Reading Endorsement.   I have to “double” up on the first semester.  So I will be taking 9 hours.  Tutoring will not be available the month of January.  Between professional development on Tuesday, NAU on Wednesday & Thursday, and I don’t tutor on Friday, Monday is the only day open and I need that for personal reasons.  In addition, personally, my son is getting married February 5 and I really need the extra time to create a fairytale in the park for them.  Tutoring will resume in February on Monday-Tuesday and in March on Wednesday.  My classes will always be held on Thursday.  This is the best schedule that I could come up with.  Thanks for your support and understanding.
