2nd Grade News

Hello Families,
Second grade is busy at work. We are working on our measurement booklets in Science. When we finish those, we are moving on to studying plants and animals, and their life cycles. In Social Studies we just finished learning about transportation, types of communities, and traditions and customs shared by different types of families. We are now studying geographical features of our country and about our state of Arizona. In Math we are continuing to work on mastery of basic math facts. We are also studying place value, before we go on to addition and subtraction with regrouping. In Reading, we are focusing on vocabulary and comprehension skills. The students are working on being able to sequence stories, by writing summaries telling what happened first, next, and last in the story. We are also working on characterization and story elements. In Religion, we are finishing up the unit about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Many of our second graders will be making their Reconciliation on December 2, 2004. We will be taking a quiz in Religion on the following prayers: The Act of Contrition – Dec. 1; The Our Father - Dec. 8 and the Hail Mary – Dec. 8.
In addition to our academics, the second graders are working on the first five DWP Life Skills. We made flashcards to help us remember the six steps to listening. We will be taking a quiz on those six steps shortly. We are also working on the skills of Following Directions, Asking Appropriate Questions, Sharing, and Social Skills. We are working on the principle that we are a second grade family and we want to treat each other as nicely and as respectfully as we want to be treated. The second graders learned that Jesus expects us to love one another as he loves us.
