Sr. Laverne Fullem, I.B.V.M.

We are having a wonderful year!  The follwing areas are what we have studied or will study:

bullet

Religion - We studied famous people in the Old Testament, Reconciliation, Eucharist and the coming of the Holy Spirit.  By April 2 we will have completed Benziger Family Life Program.  We will then study Jesus' life and God's kingdom of love.

bullet

Reading - We are studying in-depth comprehension skills:  story webs, plot lines, Venn diagrams, graphic organizers and summarizing strategies.  Our monthly books must be 100 pages or more with lengthy reports when completed.  The writing process shows increased fluency and skill in identifying main ideas and developing them into a polished summary.

bullet

Phonics skills are quite challenging.  We have been working with the 12 rules of syllabicatoin and will begin detailed work with Dicitonary guide words, and locating words between a pair of guide words.

bullet

Math - Keep working on mastery of multiplication and division facts, as well as subtraction.  The latter shows a deficiency in speed and accuracy.  We have mastered 3-digit dividends amd are going for 4 digits.  Fractions are fun, and our next challenge will be decimals.

bullet

Social Studies - We are studying state and local governments and the responsibilities of citizens.  Next, we will learn about moving west on the Oregon Trail.  We will also learn about immigrants becoming U.S. Citizens.

bullet

Science - We have just begun a study of the Sun, planets, and Moon phases.  A highly interesting chapter!

bullet

English - We have completed nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and are still working on pronouns.  Capitalization and punctuation are ongoing.  This text gives abundant practice improving paragraphs by combining sentences and choosing more exact words.  We will study how to do research in April.  The challenge is to reword what is read, and not just copy.

Each child is a gift!
