Vocations: a supportive home life

HOW CAN YOU FULFILL YOUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROMOTION OF VOCATIONS WITHIN YOUR OWN FAMILY? LET'S TAKE A LOOK…

1) Let your children see the good example of parents who live a Christian life, who take Gospel demands seriously; who attend Mass frequently; who celebrate regularly the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation without fail or fear; who are happy and grateful to be Catholics! Remember, religion is important to you!

2) Pray daily... individually, as a family, at meals, in the morning, at night. Some ideas:

-That the laity who are already living a vocation may fulfill their Christian vocations to perfection in the love and service of God in their present situation: that they may be open to God’s suggestions and have the strength to do them.

-That those faced with a vocational choice consider their own God-given abilities and temperament. and decide on a vocation in light of God's will for them.

-A simple addition to the grace before meals. such as, "Dear Lord, help us too do what You would have us do for You today." This keeps the family’s focus on our dependence on God and the need to do His will.

3) Encourage children to become involved in parish projects in the Sacred Liturgy as servers or other liturgical ministers. and in charitable works.

4) Speak with respect about priests and religious. especially when differences arise. Be careful of the way criticism of the Church is handled,

5) Let your parish priests and religious know they are welcome in your home. Invite them to visit with you and your children.

6) Keep up-to-date on current ideas as to the training, life, and role of priests and religious in the Church. Familiarize yourself with their goals and apostolate in the community.

7) Join the SERRA Club in your community to help promote Church vocations.

8) Don't neglect your own need for spiritual growth.  Do some spiritual reading, subscribe to a good Catholic periodical, have some good spiritual books on your bookshelf, have a Bible and a Catechism visible in your home AND USE THEM!

9) Let everyone who enters your home know that it's a Catholic household! Have a crucifix, statuette of the Blessed Virgin. St. Joseph, or the Holy Family blessed by your priest. and have it prominently displayed in your home. Have a picture of the Lord's Supper on the wall of your dining room.

10) Place a crucifix or image of the Guardian Angels in your children’s rooms. Bless your kids on their foreheads at the start of each day before they leave for school or you leave for work. Bless them after you pray with them before bedtime.
